The Importance Of A Privacy Policy

Why are privacy policies so important?

Why should you have a privacy policy?

Why should your website have a privacy policy? Well, there are many reasons, but one of the main reasons is so that your customers will understand exactly what you intend to do. A privacy policy is put into place by most any reliable and honest company and is crucial to the success or failure of your business.

What Is A Privacy Policy?

A privacy policy is a policy that your business publishes that gives your customers and visitors specific information about how you intend to use any information that you collect from them while they are on your website. This privacy policy should first outline what information you collect.

For instance, if you collect first and last names, addresses, telephone numbers, email address, cell phone numbers, credit card information, or any other identifying information, your privacy policy should clearly state this. Furthermore, if you use cookies for any reason, you should state that your website uses cookies and what information is collected

What Else Should My Privacy Policy Include?

Along side of what information your website collects, you should also include how this information will be stored and used. If you intend to share this information with any other person, this includes selling the information, offering it to affiliates or partners, and so on, you need to state this very clearly. If you share only certain information, state which information you will share.

For example, many affiliate websites or websites of those in direct sales, will need to share certain information with their drop shippers or suppliers, this will need to be directly stated in your privacy policy. Many people are concerned with identity theft today, make sure you state if any of their financial information or other identifying information will be stored and how it will be stored.

If you state in your privacy policy that you will not share any information with any person for any reason and you do, you could be opening the door for some real trouble. It never pays to lie for any reason and lying on your privacy policy is just as offensive. Not holding true to your privacy policy could leave you open for lawsuits or even criminal action.

Be sure to have a privacy policy and be sure that it is honest to boost customer trust.
